RON 92? RON 95? RON 97?
What’s that??
RON – Research Octane Number; is a measure of the resistance of gasoline and other fuels to detonation (engine knocking) in spark-ignition internal combustion engines. High-performance engines typically have higher compression ratios and are therefore more prone to detonation, so they require higher octane fuel. A lower-performance engine will not generally perform better with high-octane fuel, since the compression ratio is fixed by the engine design.
“Higher RON levels does not produce more power – it’s only safer”
RON ratings in different countries;
USA – regular RON 92, premium RON 97
UK – regular RON 95, premium RON 97, super RON 100
Australia – regular RON91, premium RON 95, super RON 98
Malaysia – regular RON 92, premium (soon to be) RON 95, super RON 97
“RON ratings are not quality ratings”
In conclusion:-
a) If you are driving a normal daily driving non-performance car (e.g. vios, camry, city, civic, estima, wira, kancil, myvi, iswara) RON 95 petrol is more than enough – higher and more expensive RON petrol rating is only a waste of your money
“If your car only requires RON 95, higher RON petrol rating is only a waste of your money!”
b) If you are driving a performance car; turbocharged, supercharged, high compression (e.g. rx8, ferrari, skyline, lamborghini, prosche, fairlady, evo, impreza) RON 97 is the more suitable petrol to prevent detonation when pushing the engine hard
“Hey Malaysians, this is one good move the government is making.” =)
